Un peu d’histoire des noirs au Canada!

Women in the “Promised Land” places African Canadian women’s lived experiences, identities, and histories at the centre of Canada’s past. This collection of original research edited by leading scholars in the field encourages readers to interrogate the idea of Canada as a “Promised Land” by examining the rich and varied history of African Canadian women.

The nine chapters span the early 1830’s of slavery through to the late twentieth centuries of activism. This interdisciplinary collection draws on existing research from cultural studies, literary studies, communications, and visual culture to reframe familiar figures in African Canadian women’s history, such as feminist Mary Ann Shadd and civil rights activist Viola Desmond, in the wider African diaspora.

This invaluable text sheds light on questions of the past, present, and future in the field, and is best suited for undergraduate courses in women’s studies, African studies, sociology, and history.

Pour de nombreux Canadiens, l’histoire des Afro-Canadiens est limitée à celle du Chemin de fer clandestin, mais il est d’autres histoires canadiennes qui intéressent plusieurs autre chercheurs. Boulou Ebanda de B’béri, professeur en Sciences de la Communication et « Cultural Studies » à l’Université d’Ottawa, et co-rédacteur et chercheur principal du livre « Terre promise: histoire et historiographie de l’expérience des noirs a Chatham-Kent et au-delà, » se joint à nous aujourd’hui pour discuter de ses travaux pour l’histoire afro-canadienne. Résumé: Un essai, politique, sur l’oralité dans un corpus de films d’Afrique noire francophone de 1950 à 2000. Dans un langage clair, l’auteur illustre comment dans les sociétés de l’écriture, le texte engagerait l’Homme et que cette écriture aurait imposé un genre, un style et des modes de production de sens qui sont propres à ces sociétés de l’écriture d’où, par exemple, la naissance du langage cinématographique formalisé. Ainsi il se demande ce qui arriverait à une analyse de film calquée sur ce langage dont les articulations discursives ne sont pas nécessairement en adéquation avec la mysticité de la parole qui, elle, engagerait véritablement l’Homme en Afrique noire? Qu’arrive-t-il à l’analyse quand l’image d’une parole détourne le sens prescrit dans les modes opératoires du langage cinématographique des sociétés de l’écrit ? Comment le cinéma, à travers la technique audiovisuelle, devient-il une technologie par excellence capable de nous faire voir la nature mystique et culturelle de cette parole ?

Boulou Ebanda de B’béri, Ph.D. est  Directeur-fondateur du LAMAC&S, Professeur titulaire en Sciences de la communication, et  Membre de la Faculté des études supérieures et postdoctorales à l’Université d’Ottawa Habileté à diriger des recherches avancées (HDR). Il a entre autres été Professeur et chercheur invité aux Universités de Californie (Santa Barbara); Northeastern (Boston), KwaZulu Natal (Durban) et Deakin (Melbourne).

Professeur Boulou Ebanda de B’béri compte plusieurs prix académiques à son actif, notamment le Fonds de la relève de la Fondation canadienne de l’innovation (FCI); le Prix Van Horne; et le Prix Engagement, Succès et Excellence de la Fédération des étudiants et étudiantes de l’Université d’Ottawa.
