My name is Paul Melchin, and have just finished my PhD in the Department of Linguistics at the University of Ottawa in Ontario, Canada. I am currently working as a part-time professor.

My research interests mostly lie in the area of syntax. I have recently completed my doctoral thesis, in which I argue that the selectional properties of verbs are determined by the verbs’ semantics, rather than being arbitrarily specified. It focuses on the phenomena of unspecified object deletion and l-selection of (seemingly) arbitrary prepositions. I also work on comparative syntax of plurals and other aspects of nominal syntax in Korean and other East Asian languages. Previously I have focused on nominal syntax, pronouns, and the syntax-semantics interface, exploring how the syntax and semantics of noun phrases in a language relates to the properties of that language’s personal pronouns.
